Quick Start and Usage

Help

Find detailed, step-by-step instructions below on plugin installation, usage, and license management.

How to use the plugin with 3rd-party addons for Elementor?

This option is available only for the Pro version of the plugin.

You can now easily integrate and search & replace any text, images, links, or HTML with some of the most popular 3rd-party add-ons for the Elementor editor, all with a single click.

All you need to do is go to the Options page and select the plugin you use to build your Elementor pages.

Under the 3rd-party Add-ons section, all the data field keys for that plugin used throughout your published Elementor pages will load up and get selected.

After that, you can use the Search & Replace plugin as normal, and all the results will be applied only to the 3rd-party add-on data key fields.

As of November 2023, we plugins supported are: ElementsKit, Essential Addons, and Premium Addons.

How to search and replace Images in Elementor?

This option is available for both the Free and Pro versions of the plugin.

You need to select the Images search method and then choose and search & replace the images using their full path.

To make things easier, we are using the default Media Library modal. Once you find the image, click on the “Select Image” button, and it will populate the full image path.

This is a two-step process, so after you click on the Search action button and find the results, you have to do the same for the replacement image and click on the Replace action button.

How to search and replace Links (URLs)

This option is available for both the Free and Pro versions of the plugin.

There are a few different ways to search and replace links.

Text-only method:

When you use the Text-only search method, all HTML tags are stripped from the data field except the anchor <a> tag, which is used for links.

For example, if you have links inside the Text Widgets that you want to search and replace, you can use the Text-only search method to replace your URL.

Links (URLs) method:

For both individual and bulk search and replace, you need to select the Links (URLs) option to search and replace URLs.

When you do this, the plugin will target all the widgets that use the “url” data field key, for example, Buttons.

In the default widgets that come with Elementor and Elementor Pro, the “url” data field key is used for all links with a few exceptions.

Links (URLs) method + Unfiltered URLs:

This approach can be used for partial or non-compliant URLs.

When you use the Links (URLs) search method, all input data is filtered and sanitized to make it valid.

There are times when you want to search and replace only a part of the URL, or the URL doesn’t comply with the URI syntax http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2396.html.

One example would be if you have non-Latin symbols in the URL or a mixed URL with entities.

To be able to search and replace the above links, we have added an option where you can disable sanitization and validation when you use the Links (URLs) method.

All you need to do is go to the Options page and select “Yes” for Unfiltered URLs.

Custom URL data field keys:

This way can be used with 3rd-party plugins where you need to select custom data field keys by using the Scan Data button on the Options page.

Usually, 3rd-party plugins use a prefix for their data field keys, for example, “elkit_”, and then you need to look for the keyword “url” in the addon field key.

After selecting all the data field keys (including the required ones), you can perform the search and replace for all URLs that match the 3rd-party plugin keys with links.

How to use bulk search & replace for Elementor?

Bulk search and replace is a feature included only in the Pro version of the plugin. With this feature, you can run a mass search and replace on an unlimited number of posts and pages.

It is important to note that before you do a bulk search and replace, you should create a backup of your WordPress database.

Here are the options that you will see on the bulk search and replace page.

HTML with RegExp:

You can use Regular Expressions to match HTML or any other Elementor content and then replace.

You need to have a very good understanding of regular expressions and test your code previously on sites like Regular-Expressions.info because our plugin does very minimal checks and validations.

The chance to break your site and need to restore it from your backup is higher than any other feature of the plugin.

Dry-run:

To ensure you don’t make any mistakes and need to restore your database from backup, we have added a Dry-run option by default.

This option is enabled, and it’s highly recommended to have it on. When the Dry-run option is set to “Yes”, your search and replace become a two-step process.

First, you check the search method, select all the posts and pages, and enter your search phrase, then click Search.

This will run a safe mode that will only find and/or highlight the results without replacing anything. The highlighter is only available for the Text-only search method.

However, you can review any of the selected posts and pages, and you will also see the number of search results found by each post or page.

The Dry-run option can be toggled on the Options page.

Select Post Type:

Under this section of the bulk search and replace, you will see a list with all the Posts, Pages, and Custom Post Types that have published Elementor pages.

After checking the Post Type, you will see all the individual posts or pages.

You have the ability to search and toggle all posts with the top bar.

Only published Elementor posts and pages will show in this section (drafts or none Elementor posts will not show up).

Search Method:

You have three search methods: Text-only, Links (URLs), and Images.

Each method will target different data fields by default. You can manipulate this on the Options page.

In addition, you can also choose to have a case-sensitive Text-only search method.

Search For:

This is where you enter/select your search phrase, link, or image.

Depending on the search method, this field will change its input type.

There is a minimum of 3 characters for the Text-only method and, by default, validation and sanitization functions when you run the Links (URLs) and Images search methods.

Replace With:

The Replace with field has the same functionality as the Search for, but this is where you enter/select the replacement text, link, or image.

This is hidden by default if the Dry-run option is set to “Yes”, and you need to run the Search before you see this field.

Action Buttons:

There are 4 action buttons that will show up depending on the stage or options selected for your bulk search and replace.

  • Search: This action button will show up if you have the Dry-run option selected as “Yes”.
  • Replace: This action button will show up either after you run Search as Dry-run or if you do a straight search and replace and have the Dry-run option selected as “No”.
  • Clear: This action button will clear all the custom tags added to highlight Text-only search results. You can run this action at any time.
  • Search & Replace: You will see this action button if you select to use the HTML RegEx feature.

Lastly, there is a default raw data limit set at 300kb for both the Free and Pro versions, which can be lifted all the way up to 10,240kb on the Options page for the Pro plugin.

How to do search and replace in Elementor?

Doing a search and replace in the Elementor editor is available for both the Free and Pro versions of the plugin.

Intro:

Open any published Elementor post or page and click on the Menu icon in the top left corner. After that, in the second menu, you will see the “Search & Replace” text.

If you have enabled the Editor Top Bar from the Elementor Features tab, then you will see the “Search & Replace” icon in the main menu (top left corner).

You will see a modal window with all the available options.

The only difference between the Free and Pro versions for individual search and replace is the default raw data limit of 300kb, which can be increased in the Pro version under the Options tab.

Search & Replace:

The search and replace is a two-step process:

First, select your search method (Text-only, Links URLs, or Images) and choose either to Highlight text on search or use Case-Sensitive search and replace. Then, you need to enter your search phrase and click on the Search action button.

Next, you will get a response message with the number of results and a text highlighter if you are doing Text-only search and replace. At this point, no replacement is made; we have only added some custom tags that can be removed at any given time by clicking on the Clear action button.

Once you review the changes and are satisfied with the result, you can then add the replacement and click the Replace action button.

You have one more opportunity to revert the changes back if the page breaks and you are not happy with the results by using the Undo action button next to the response message with results. This will bring back the search and replace to its initial state.

At each stage of the search and replace process, the current page is automatically saved, and you don’t need to do any additional updates.

How to backup and import database with the plugin?

It is strongly recommended that you back up your database before using the Search & Replace for Elementor plugin.

For this reason, we have added a built-in Backup feature to our plugin to cover 90% of the case scenarios.

Backup Database:

You can simply go to the Elementor > Search & Replace menu and then click on the Backup tab.

There, you have the option to either Backup or Import your database at any point.

Once you click on the “Backup Database” button and your backup is completed, you will get a message with a Download link.

You can then download the backup in .sql file, which will automatically delete the file from your server and save it locally.

Import Database:

At this point, you will be safe to perform any search and replace actions. If anything goes wrong, you can then go back to your Backup tab, select your local .sql file, and Import it to restore the previous version of your website.

The backup feature doesn’t provide manual or full backup functionality and has its limitations (e.g., large databases, server execution time, or maximum database packets allowed, etc.).

Other Methods:

In case you have problems with the feature, you can always use manual backup or almost any other backup plugin from WP.org.

How will I get plugin updates?

Plugin updates will be delivered like any other plugin installed on your website. You will be notified if there are updates available, the same way as with any other plugin from WP.org.

It is recommended that you turn on the “Enable auto-updates” option so that you will have the latest version of the plugin at all times.

You will receive plugin updates and be able to use the plugin while you have an active license that has not expired.

Once your license has expired and/or you cancel your auto-renewal either from the site or from PayPal, then you will stop receiving updates and support.

You will receive an email notification that your license is about to expire.

How do I activate the plugin license?

After you have successfully installed and activated the plugin, to be able to use it, you need to enter your license code; otherwise, you will receive the message: “Your license key has either expired or is invalid. Go to the plugin settings page, enter, and activate your license.”

Your license key can be found:

  • On your Purchase Receipt after you complete your payment.
  • In the email account that you used to register and make your purchase.
  • In your Search & Replace account under My Account > Orders.
  • Once you have your license code, you can then log in to your WP Admin area and go to Elementor > Search & Replace and click on the License tab.

If this is your first time, you will see an inactive status and an indication that your license code hasn’t been added.

After you copy/paste your license code, you must click on the “Activate License” button. If all goes well, you will see the message: “Success! This is a valid license key for Search & Replace for Elementor Pro,” and the inactive status will turn to active.

At this point, you can start using the plugin with all its features.

How to install the plugin in WordPress?

Installing the plugin via WordPress is the preferred way since it is much easier to follow and doesn’t require any additional software. However, if you don’t have permission to upload plugins via the WP Admin area, then you need to use the alternative and install the plugin via FTP or SFTP.

Once you download the search-replace-for-elementor-pro.zip file after your purchase from your account, log in to your WP Admin area and go to Plugins > Add New from the menu. You can then click on the “Upload Plugin” button, select the archive file, and install it.

Once the plugin installation is successful, you need to activate it by clicking on the “Activate” link.

If you already have the free version installed, either deactivate it or it will be deactivated automatically. You cannot have both versions active at the same time.

To access the plugin, you can either go to Elementor > Search and Replace sub-menu in your WP Admin or edit any post that has been previously saved with Elementor and open the Menu > Search & Replace located in the top left of your editor. This will open a modal window with the Search and Replace options.

How to install the plugin with FTP or SFTP?

You can install the Search and Replace for Elementor Pro plugin by uploading the plugin files via FTP or SFTP using programs like FileZilla or WinSCP.

Once you download the search-replace-for-elementor-pro.zip file after your purchase from your account, unzip the archive into the search-replace-for-elementor-pro folder, and upload it to your server via FTP under wp-content/plugins.

After your upload is completed, log in to your WP Admin area, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins, and activate the Search and Replace for Elementor Pro.

If you already have the free version installed, either deactivate it, or it will be deactivated automatically. You cannot have both versions active at the same time.

To access the plugin, you can either go to Elementor > Search & Replace sub-menu in your WP Admin or edit any post that has been previously saved with Elementor and open the Menu > Search & Replace located in the top left of your editor. This will open a modal window with the Search and Replace options.
